CZI betrayed us – businessman

HARARE
BUSINESS owners have threatened to pull out of the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI), which has betrayed them at the most critical time as the Zanu (PF) government intensifies its crackdown on industry and commerce.
CZI has surprised many by supporting the destructive crackdow

n on manufacturing, wholesale and retail industries by the Mugabe regime, raising fears about long-suspected alliances it has with the ruling party.
“We are deeply worried about this situation, especially what seems to be collaboration by the leadership of CZI in the crackdown,” a businessman said.
“How can the leadership come out saying we should comply with the ongoing madness as well as appearing to support the chaos? We are considering pulling out of CZI, which has proved our worst fears, that it has been politicized.”
CZI president, Callisto Jokonya, who is a member of the ruling ZAnu (PF) party, has said: “We are complying with the directive (to reduce prices). We are law-abiding citizens. We will do what we have been told.”
This is despite the crackdown bringing the closure of many businesses whilst thousands lose their jobs.
It has also emerged that a group of business owners is planning to file a lawsuit against government, challenging the crackdown, particularly the forced price reductions as illegal. – Peter Kadiki
