The state universities have warned students to settle the new fees before the start of the new semester or face being barred from lessons.
The Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, the ailing Stan Mudenge could not be immediately reached for comment.
A recent study by the Students Solidarity Trust, a non governmental organisation involved in the protection of the rights of students at tertiary institutions, says the introduction of fees at universities in 2005 has seen higher education becoming a privilege of the very rich only.
