The issue has reportedly divided Catholics, amid reports that some parishioners saw no reason why Mugabe, a born and practising Catholic, should be excommunicated.
The Pope has not yet responded to the letter, reportedly sent last month.
A senior Catholic priest told The Zimbabwean that anybody, whether Catholic or non-Catholic, was free to write to the Pope about anything but it was up to the Pontiff to respond or not.
“But, personally I do not think there are any real grounds to excommunicate the President. He has not taught heresy or proclaimed any false doctrine,” said the priest. – Chief Reporter
