Ivory scandal – more

HARARE
Industry and International Trade minister Obert Mpofu is alleged to have been found with unaccounted for ivory on three occasions, without the matter being probed or charges laid.
Informed sources (named) came forward to provide information following the publication by this paper last

week of a story in which Mpofu and minister of Policy Implementation Webster Shamu were implicated in illicit ivory trade.
Another source alleged that Mpofu was found with an undisclosed quantity of ivory in Bulawayo. “I am one of the police officers that were deployed there after a tip-off but couldn’t proceed with the matter further because of the usual story of intimidation,” the source said. “That was after another raid at Kanondo (Mpofu’s farm) had led to the discovery of a big consignment of ivory ready for shipment somewhere and again nothing was done.” Mpofu denies involvement in illegal trading of ivory and other animal products. When contacted again this week, the minister declined to discuss the matter.
