Land grab continues

HARARE
Despite impassioned pleas by Reserve Bank governor Gideon Gono to halt any further farm seizures, Zimbabwe's few remaining commercial farmers are still being served with eviction notices.
The Zimbabwean heard that tensions were mounting in Mashonaland, where Justice for Agriculture, a f

armers’ pressure group, reports that marauding thugs were laying siege to Commercial Farmers Union (CFU) boss Doug Taylor-Freeme’s farm on allegations that he sabotaged the economy by destroying 40 hectares of 30cm-high wheat, although it was a write-off due to poor irrigation caused by load shedding. The RBZ gave Taylor-Freeme the green light to destroy the crop.
Fourteen more farmers were served with eviction notices at the beginning of the month. Gono has slammed the new wave of farm seizures in the country, branding the invaders “criminals” and warning their actions may hurt an already struggling economy.
Carlos, a South African farmer who requested that his identity be kept secret, has been told to vacate his farm, about 260 km north west of Harare, by the end of the week. By last April, there were about 44 farmers left in the district out of 176. With the new notices, quite a number will now have to abandon their crops. However, the government says everything is in order.
After 20 years on this farm, Carlos and his workers are desperate.
