British Summer eludes us! They’re calling it The Great British Monsoon. We’re calling it the year we all decided to emigrate to Zanzibar and stopped talking about the weather altogether.
So, enough about the weather and straight to the music. We’ve got a big musical weekend coming up – we’re talking about world-soul-jazz-roots-global grooves here. There’s WOMAD going on as usual and then there’s the London alternative for those of you who don’t fancy journeying out into the sticks & getting mudded out Glastonbury style.
There’s something called GET STAND UP, a benefit festival happening at the Union Chapel in Islington this Saturday from 2pm till 10pm. If you’ve never been to the Union Chapel and you live in London then you haven’t lived. Time Out voted it the best place to see live music a couple of years ago and it still is. Its also been nominated as one of the 100 reasons to remain in London. Contemporary artists like David Byrne, Goldfrapp, Morcheeba, Bjork and world music favourites like Salif Kieta, Mariza, Ravi Shankar, Baaba Maal and many others have all performed in the unique setting.
GET STAND UP is really, doing what it says on the tin. We’re getting off our bums and trying to continue from where the Live Aid & Make Poverty History campaign left off back in 2005. This time we’re doing it for the children of Zimbabwe. 10 bands for a Tenner! And all for a worthy cause
