Bindura bus tragedy death toll rises (17-08-07)

HARARE - The death toll from a grisly head-on collision in Bindura
Sunday involving a passenger bus and a car has risen to 15, with six more
survivors passing away during the course of the week.

Fifty two survivors were admitted to various hospitals, including

the
State-run Bindura Hospital, some in critical condition. By Thursday at
least 46 were struggling for their lives.
The accident brings to 163 the number of people who have perished in
road accidents since last week.

The first accident took place in the capital early last week when a
passenger train collided head-on with a freight train killing one soldier and
injuring 83 others.

Police spokesman Andrew Phiri said all four people traveling in the car
died on the spot while the bus, which was ferrying 74 passengers from
Mukumbura to Harare suffered five casualties.

The names of the dead and survivors were not immediately available.
Neither were the names of the driver and the conductor.
Meanwhile, President Robert Mugabe sent condolences to relatives and
friends of the people who died, or were injured in the accident.
The President wished survivors speedy recovery.

In his message Mugabe said he was saddened by news of the death of
fellow countrymen, just less than a week after one soldier in the Presidential
Guard died in the train crash last week.
“Once again in less than a week, I express deep sorrow following the
death of nine people in a road accident,” the message read.
He in appealed to drivers to be careful to stop road carnage. He told
traffic police to apprehend drivers who disobey traffic laws.

Accidents have continued to claim innocent lives on Zimbabwe roads due
to a combination of faulty signals, drunk driving and recklessness.
Long cherished plans to build dual carriageways have remained a pipe
dream.
