Bulawayo city sends SOS to Zim soldiers (28-08-07)

BULAWAYO:
The Bulawayo City Council (BCC) has sent an SOS to the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) to provide water and bowsers to service residential and industrial areas amid worsening water shortages in the country's second largest city.

Bulawayo is in the throes of a gripping water s

hortage, which have seen the city council introducing a stringent water-rationing regime including the industrial areas and the Central Business District (CBD).

In an effort to alleviate the water shortages, the council introduced water bowsers to service areas facing critical shortages but the mitigatory efforts have disabled by lack of adequate bowsers and fuel shortages.

In an interview, the executive Mayor, Japhet Ndabeni-Ncube confirmed that they had written to various stakeholders for their help in the provision of bowsers.

“It’s a understanding issue where we ask for bowsers from anywhere including the army though it is yet to respond to our request,” said Ncube this morning.

Residents in most of Bulawayo’ high density suburbs are going for more than two weeks without water as the crisis that has seen council decommission three dams inside six months continues to worsen.

The remaining two dams-Insiza and Inyankuni-are only supplying a mere 67 000 cubic meters a day against normal requirements of about 145 000 cubic meters.

Bulawayo experienced a similar crisis last year where council recorded a marked increase in cases of diarrhea. But council has warned the situation would be more grave this year as the two remaining dams might dry up before the start of the rainy season- CAJ News
