Chombo starts campaign (24-08-07)

HARARE - Local Government, Public Works and Urban Development Minister, Ignatius Chombo, has started moving around the country mobilising support for the Mugabe regime, following massive defections of Zanu (PF) supporters to the opposition Movement for Democratic Change.

ysts are already predicting a victory for the opposition MDC, led by Morgan Tsvangirai.
Chombo, who is well known for his track record in eliminating democratically elected MDC-run city councils, is a strong Mugabe supporter.
It is understood that Chombo, who has already launched his campaign for the ruling party, will be in Matabeleland soon to officiate at the installation of two chiefs.
Zanu (PF) has in the past instilled fear in MDC supporters and prevented them from voting through the use of chiefs. Such state-sponsored intimidation has been widely witnessed in the whole of Mashonaland and some parts of Masvingo, particularly Mwenezi and Chiredzi districts.
During the just ended voter registration exercise, chiefs energetically complied with Zanu (PF) orders and are denied opposition supporters the necessary proof of residency, thus preventing them from registering to vote at the next elections. – Trust Matsilele
