CAPS UNITED FC is in serious turmoil as coach Moses Chunga offers to step down following a sustained run of unconvincing results - but it has emerged a one-off payment of R150 000 he received from the club is tying hi

m down.
CAJ News has established that Chunga was paid his salary for the whole year, in South African currency, by Caps United FC operations director, Farai Jere, at the beginning of the year, as it was hoped he would take the club to the top.
Jere, a businessman specializing in freight and shipping, poured funds into the club’s preparations, including pre-season camping in South Africa.
But just beyond mid-season, Chunga at the weekend scraped another draw – the tenth of the season – and alarm bells tolled louder as disgruntled fans caused mayhem at Gwanzura Stadium, causing police to intervene and use teargas.
Jere confirmed to CAJ News that Chunga received his salary but declined to discuss the figure.
“We did our best for the club and the coach, and it is true that included offering him a good package, which we made available. That includes his annual salary but we cannot discuss figures because they are confidential,” he said.
Chunga declined to discuss the matter on Monday.
However, a senior official at the club revealed that the former Dynamos and Warriors kingpin was paid that amount.
“He was paid R150 000 at the beginning of the season and that is on the record. Jere then was very enthusiastic and hoped Chunga would do miracles, and even ignored advice from many people who warned against trusting Chunga that much, given his history of falling out with clubs over petty issues,” he said.
Chunga, clearly watching his world crumble around him, on Sunday announced he was resigning from Caps United. He blames a section of supporters for the results, saying they are inherently opposed to his presence at the club and cause the recurring scenes of mayhem.
It is reported, however, that a meeting with the directors afterwards convinced the former Warriors’ assistant coach to stay at the club. But insiders said he was reluctant to continue.
The turmoil saddling Chunga comes just at the wrong time for him, as his admirers were pushing for him to be appointed national team coach after the dismissal of Charles Mhlauri, with whom Chunga has openly clashed and traded accusations.
Ironically, the club at which Chunga has failed to find peace – that is, Caps United – is the same one Mhlauri used as a springboard when he won the championship with them in 2004 and 2005, before ascending to the Warriors’ position.
