…price of beasts increased
BULAWAYO
The Cold Storage Company (CSC) has finally buckled under pressure and increased the buying price of cattle following revelations that the struggling parastatal had run out of cattle to slaughter after farmers stopped selling cattle to CSC in protest ov

er the gazetted price.
This follows a recent tour of the CSC by Vice President, Joice Mujuru that revealed CSC had run out of cattle as rural farmers who supply 80 percent cattle to the parastatal stopped selling cattle to CSC in protest over the new gazetted price of cattle.
CSC chief executive officer, Ngoni Chinogaramombe confirmed that the parastatal had increased the buying price of cattle – due to resistance from farmers – to above Z$30 million from between $3 million and $12 million.
Chinogaramombe also said CSC has increased the price of beef in a bid to increase availability of the commodity after it virtually disappeared from butcheries and supermarkets after the government announced a price slash on beef in line with a controversial price blitz.
He indicated that the new retail price of economy beef per kg was now $144 000 while commercial beef, choice and super grade beef was now $172 000, $232 000 and $238 000 a kg respectively.
“There was a bit of resistance from farmers who were not happy with the prices we were offering,” said Chinogaramombe. “There was a problem because the price did not recognize the quality of beef.”
The government gazetted price of a single cow was pegged at between $3million -$12million down from between $40million and $60million while the price of beef was reduced to $90 000 from between $420 000 and $520 000 of top grade beef and $320 000 and $420 000 of economy beef respectively. – CAJ News
