DA urges SA government to protect Zim refugees (02-08-07)

JOHANNESBURG:
SOUTH Africa's main opposition political party of the Democratic Alliance (DA) has urged its government to desist from continuously violating human rights of thousands of desperate Zimbabwean refugees flooding the country.

The DA Member of Parliament, Mark Lowe, told C

AJ News on Thursday afternoon that the government should not ignore the plight of refugees/asylum seekers as it is one of its obligations to cater for them once they were in the country.

“It is time for the government to take its head out of sand. A humanitarian tragedy is unfolding as government pussyfoots around the issue, alternatively dodging it or playing it down.

“Ignoring or denying the refugee crisis occuring in South Africa right now will not prevent the tide of desperate, hungry and abused refugees from attempting to cross the border, legally and illegally,” said Mark.

He added: “And once they are in South Africa, ignoring them would be a human rights abuse of gargantuan proportions, committed by our government, which has always pledged itself to the protection of human rights, and to those whose human rights have been stripped from them.”

Zimbabwe’s number of refugees is estimated at above 3 00 000 (three million) in South Africa whilst over one million (1 000 000) are believed to be in Botswana, 500 000 others are seeking refuge in the United Kingom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America (USA)- CAJ News.
