“It is very likely the elections will not be held before June next year at the earliest,” a source said. “The matter is still being deliberated but the logistical challenges cannot be avoided. The next meeting is expected to come up with a resolute position.”
Zanu (PF) secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa confirmed the matter was being considered, saying progress on the amendment bill would determine the course of events regarding candidates and launching of the campaign.
The ruling party has a major leadership puzzle to tackle, despite fervent efforts by Mugabe to superimpose his candidature for the presidential elections. Stiff resistance is being mobilized mainly by the Majuru faction as well as a growing team of members pushing for reformation.
Mutasa said the party had not yet decided on dates for a special congress, which the majority are calling for. Mugabe and his backers reportedly want an annual conference at which they hope to manipulate selection of candidates for the parliamentary elections.
