ligence organisation, investigations by The Zimbabwean have established that he is still an active member of the CIO but has been tasked with assignments to offer surveillance on organisations and individuals perceived to be ‘proponents of regime change’ through his private security company, Home Guard.
A source has alleged that Tekere broke into Pius Ncube’s premises and vandalized the telephones. “He then returned a few days later posing as a technician from TelOne where he installed secret cameras to film Ncube while in his quarters. The footage from the films was then taken away and ‘mixed’ at some private studios using modern technology,” said the source.
It is also alleged that Tekere was one of the Zanu (PF) stalwarts who tortured senior PF Zapu officials such as former Zapu secretary general, Welshman Mabhena, former Mpopoma MP, the late Sidney Malunga and the Zapu candidate in the 1980 elections for Harare Central, Nevison Nyashanu, during the Gukurahundi genocidal massacres.
A news crew from The Zimbabwean last week visited the Highlanders Club House in Bulawayo where club supporters spoke about their anxiety about patronizing the joint, where security is being provided by Tekere’s Home Guard.
A patron at the cub house said: “As supporters and patrons we are not comfortable with the fact that Home Guard Security is providing security, or is it surveillance?, at the club house. We are not sure if our activities are being filmed using hidden cameras. A large number of patrons have issued an ultimatum to the Highlanders Football Club that they will stop patronizing the club house until Home Guard Security is removed from the Highlanders premises.”
A senior club official told The Zimbabwean that they were considering hiring another security company to work alongside Home Guard Security or buy out their contract, which runs until the end of the year.
“These Home Guard Security people have caused us untold anguish since the head of the company was linked to the Pius Ncube issue but I don’t want to be linked or connected to that saga and please don’t mention my name on that because this is now a sensitive issue which has now assumed a political dimension,” said the official.
Business concerns, including some Non Governmental Organisations occupying Fidelity Towers in Fife Street, Bulawayo have said they will vacate the premises if Home Guard Security, where Ernest Tekere is a regular visitor, continues to provide security.
A tenant at Fidelity Towers told The Zimbabwean: “The property manager is now in a dilemma because tenants are saying it is possible that the security company has bugged the entire complex.” – Own correspondent
