Let our people vote, Moyo tells SA

The MDC (Tsvangirai) on Monday urged Southern Africa Development Community
(SADC) leaders to force the Zimbabwean government to permit millions of its
citizens living in the region to vote in the presidential and parliamentary
elections scheduled for next year.
MDC national chairman L

ovemore Moyo speaking at a press conference in
Johannesburg said the diaspora vote was significant for the democratic
transformation in Zimbabwe.
“The diaspora vote is critical to our democratic transformation in Zimbabwe.
Given that there is an estimated 3,5 million Zimbabweans in South Africa
alone, a mechanism must be put in place to enable them vote in the
elections,” Moyo said adding “We believe that it is achievable, it can be
done as it happened in other SADC state.”
Moyo also called on the South African government and regional leaders to
look into the plight of Zimbabwean refugees.
“The party is concerned about the welfare of Zimbabweans in South Africa as
they live in crowded and unhygienic conditions,” he said.
Meanwhile, SA president, Thabo Mbeki, has rejected reports that SADC leaders
were divided over Zimbabwe issue.
“The reality is that in a very real sense the problems of Zimbabwe are our
problems, in the same way that the problems of the rest of Southern Africa
are problems for Zimbabwe as well,” Mbeki said. – Ntando Ncube
