Tsvangirai tours empty shelves (1-08-07)

HARARE – MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai today toured
empty supermarket shelves in the capital Harare,
telling journalists at the end of his tour that he was
shocked that all that remained in the shops were
toilet paper.
“All we found were toilet paper only,” Tsva

ngirai told
reporters outside Makro Wholesalers. “We wonder what
people are expected to do with toilet paper when there
is no food in the supermarkets.”
Tsvangirai first toured Gutsai Supermarket in the city
center and later went to Mufakose, Highfiled, then
rounded his tour with a visit to Makro Wholesalers.
Everywhere, the story was all too familiar, empty
shelves and rows upon rows of toilet paper, and potato
crisps.
His top deputies, including Tendai Biti, Nelson
Chamisa, Lovemore Moyo, Tapiwa Mashakada and many
others, accompanied Tsvangirai.
A group of journalists also accompanied the MDC
leader.
Tsvangirai was forced to run for cover at Makro after
Jocelyn Chiwenga, the wife of general Constantine
Chiwenga, the Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence
Forces, ordered that doors to the wholesalers be
closed.
“What is Tsvangirai doing here. Close all the doors
and we will deal with him and all these traitors,” she
shouted.
There was a mini scuffle as Tsvangirai’s bodyguards
pushed and shoved their way out of the wholesaler,
with Chiwenga’s bodyguards in hot pursuit.
All journalists were also forced to flee, leaving AP
photojournalist, Tsvangirai Mukwazhi in the shop.
Mukwazhi was slapped by Chiwenga three times, and
accused of lying about the situation in Zimbabwe
through his pictures. Despite producing his press
pass, that did not save him from the humiliating
assault.
