Wheat crop fails

THE 2006 wheat crop represents the worst output in seven years, with less than 100,000 tons of wheat being produced.
This may result in a rise in the price of bread and bear that will impact negatively on the country's inflation.
The Mugabe government is allegedly considering reducing the qua

ntity of wheat used in breweries, as they fear a serious drought might be pending that might hit production up to 2009. The country is already facing input problems and failing to repair pipe system on farms it impounded from white commercial farmers.
Unlike maize that is grown in the rainy season, in Zimbabwe wheat is an irrigated winter crop. But with the wheat-planting period already under way, forecasts for this year’s crop do not look good.
Zimbabwe needs about 400,000 tonnes of wheat a year, but has not produced that since year 2000.The last considerable production was in 1998 when the country had 350,000 tonnes.
