Zim singer arrives with a boom

"AUSTRALIA is gonna see boom boom!" announced a young Zimbabwean woman, soon after sailing into the Australian Idol 2007 top 24 last week.
The self-assured Tarisai Vushe battled it out with 23 other competitors for the semi-final stage. At the time of going to press, the field was being stri

pped down further to choose the final 12.
The softly spoken 20-year-old blew them away with her amazing rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Have Nothing’. “There’s a lot of people loving what you just did then,” said judge Kyle Sandilands.
Not only did Tarisai stun viewers with her rare talent, she also caused a stir by taking along her Bible. “The only one who knows if I’m going to get through is God,” she said while being quizzed on why she brought the Holy Book.
A lover of the movie ‘Dream Girls’ and R’n’B in general, she lists Whitney Houston and Tina Turner as inspirations. Tarisai is a psychology student at an Australian university.
“A strong voice is an advantage but an artist needs extras to spice it up. First, personality is essential. It reflects who you are as an artiste and it shows how unique you are as an artiste. Secondly, the ability to mean what you sing. It reflects how real you are and that helps to deliver the message of the song when one means it. Nothing is boring when meaning is delivered,” she says.
The Idol phenomenon began in the UK as Pop Idol in October 2001. Singing talents are judged by a panel of outspoken experts and then put to the vote of the viewing public. Last Sunday, six of the male contestants battled it out in the Semi-Finals Group 1 category. The first six female contestants were to perform in the next show. All are vying to make it to the Top 12, who will battle it out in the finals. – CAJ News
