Bid to beef up force

BULAWAYO - Zimbabwean police Commissioner, Augustine Chihuri, has directed provincial police commanders to re-engage former members of the police special constabulary unit, dismissed eight years ago, as he tries to boost manpower ahead of the elections.
Chihuri is also said to have cancelled

sick leave for police officers and ordered that those who had been granted such leave should report back to work immediately and perform standby duties at their stations under regular checks by police doctors.
Sources within the police told The Zimbabwean that the move hopes to make up for massive resignations by mainly junior officers.
“The recruitment of trainee police officers has failed to counter the massive resignations and the Commissioner has decided to recall members of the B branch of the police special constabulary unit who were stopped from doing police duties in 2000, when the organisation ran out of money to pay them,” said a source within the police headquarters in Harare.
The source added that more than 3,500 disgruntled junior police officers either resigned or deserted their jobs between January and July. – Bayethe Zitha
