Hungry people are angry people

HARARE
Yesterday we visited a sick friend in Kuwadzana, then another one in Zengeza. There were thousands of people moving around, waiting for buses and commuters. Small market areas were filled with shabby stalls selling everything from empty bottles to car parts, clothes, some veggi

es and fruit. How are all these people surviving? Is it through the black market?
We were offered 2kgs sugar for Z$500,000, a carton of cigarettes for prices between Z$200,000 to Z$450,000, flour, soap etc. Everything that is not available in the shops is apparently available on the streets in the high-density suburbs. Good-natured bargaining takes place, old clothes will be accepted as a means of payment – and so it goes on!
Toilet rolls from Botswana are being sold at just about every traffic intersection in Harare. Thank goodness!!
So while Mugabe and his Mercedes Brigade tighten their security, they do not need to tighten their belts. I would say from the appearance of some of them they need to loosen their belts. They have fuel and food in abundance and as much foreign currency as they care to steal from the Reserve Bank. A man I engaged in conversation in a bread queue said: “Do you think Mugabe knows how we are suffering?” – my response was “he doesn’t care”. It is as simple as that.
Starve the people into submission is his intention.
That may backfire badly. Hungry people are angry people. – Citizen reporter
