NCA briefs villagers

CHIVI SOUTH
Over 500 people attended a National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) meeting over the weekend addressed by the national chairman Dr Lovemore Madhuku.
The meeting was part of a series aimed at creating awareness in remote areas to encourage people there to become part of the democ

ratic process.
Madhuku explained the need to have a new constitution before next year’s parliamentary and presidential election.
“Democracy is when all citizens – young and old, urban or rural, rich and poor have a say in how their affairs are run,” he said.
Asked about the forthcoming elections, Madhuku said elections alone would not guarantee democracy or development.
“What Zimbabwe urgently needs is a new political culture that puts human freedom at the centre of national aspiration. We need a constitution that guarantees that tyrants and those opposed to Zimbabwe’s development have no space,” he said.
“Other countries amend constitutions to enhance human freedom and deepen democracy, but ours has been amended over 17 times to undermine and dehumanise our people. We are forced to live like convicts and beggars worse off than we were under the colonial regimes.” – Staff reporter
