R>The lowest-paid officer is earning Z$1.3 million a month, way below the poverty datum line that currently stands at $12 million a month.
The prison service, which had a staff complement of 5,000 workers, is recruiting 3,000 new officers to plug the gap.
Sources within the prison service said at least five junior officers were quitting their jobs every month at Chinhoyi prison, with similar figures being recorded across the country
“We are getting a basic salary of $1.3 million a month. The working conditions are pathetic and not many of us can take it any longer,” said a junior officer at Chinhoyi prison who refused to be named for fear of victimisation. – ZimOnline
