The African Commission rules a case on torture admissible (21-09-07)

Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF) welcomes the recent decision on Mr. Gabriel Shumba’s case by the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR). The mentioned AU organ recently rendered Mr. Shumba’s case on torture admissible. The case itself is groundbreaking and unique. A


s a rule, victims of political torture must first exhaust all local remedies before submitting a case to the African Commission. However, because the state of Zimbabwe does not recognise torture as a crime, Mr. Shumba was able to approach the ACHPR directly. By virtue of this decision, Zimbabwean torture victims have been presented with an arena to boldly present their torture cases, a crime perpetrated against the masses on a daily basis by the repressive regime.
