Torture-case victory

THE Zimbabwe Exiles Forum has welcomed the recent decision by the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) on Gabriel Shumba's torture case.
The ACHPR recently ruled Shumba's case admissible. As a rule, victims of political torture must first exhaust all local remedies before

submitting a case to the African Commission. However, because the state of Zimbabwe does not recognise torture as a crime, Shumba was able to approach the ACHPR directly.
By virtue of this decision, Zimbabwean torture victims have been given a forum to present their torture cases, a crime said to be widespread. – Own Correspondent
