Tsvangirai charged (06-09-07)

The MDC condemns the overt Zanu PF machinations to abuse the police to settle political scores with those who are genuinely fighting for democratic change in Zimbabwe.

Police have now formally charged President Morgan Tsvangirai with disorderly conduct, which they claim is in

violation of a section of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, following his tour of shops to assess the impact of the government’s populist move to slash prices.

President Tsvangirai was this morning accompanied to the police station by a team of lawyers led Mr Alec Muchadehama of Mbidzo, Muchadehama and Makoni Legal practitioners. He was detained for two hours at Harare Central Police Station where he was had his fingerprints taken. The police then released him and said they would proceed by way of summons.

President Tsvangirai is denying the charge. It is ironic how the police can describe a tour of shops and supermarkets as disorderly conduct. In any case, the charge is a violation of President Tsvangirai’s constitutional rights to freedom of movement, conscience and association, among other basic freedoms.

The MDC is aware of the regime’s anger at its failure to solve the current economic problems. Zanu PF should refrain from the onslaught on law-abiding citizens and instead concentrate on addressing the economic decay and the visible signs of collapse around us. The regime should desist from its current preoccupation with arresting victims to the current crisis. The primary concern of any caring government lies in improving the lives of its citizens and not arresting innocent people simply because they decided to assess the magnitude of the national crisis.

The MDC and its leadership remain unmoved by the latest intimidatory and thugocratic antics of the discredited regime. The rolling juggernaut for change remains firmly on course. We are mobilizing people to express their discontent with the current state of misery and penury that has gripped the people this nation. The hour of change is upon us.
