Zanu power struggle rages on

HARARE - An internecine power struggle is raging in the ruling Zanu (PF) ahead of the extraordinary congress in December where senior party officials are expecting President Robert Mugabe to outline his retirement plans before the expiry of his current six-year term.
Vice President Joseph Ms

ika indicated last week in Parliament that he would step down in December.
Mugabe, whose re-election in 2002 was marred by shocking poll fraud and electoral irregularities, is under immense local and international pressure to step down over his ruinous handling of the economy.
Zanu (PF) sources say the annual conference has been transformed into a special congress because the issue of the future leadership of the party would be top of the agenda.
“Everyone in the party is expecting President Mugabe to make firm indications about his future: that is his retirement plan and an announcement of his successor at the extraordinary congress,” one Zanu (PF) central committee member from the Midlands Province told The Zimbabwean.
A member of the party’s powerful Politburo organ from Masvingo confirmed this week that two distinct camps competing for power had emerged within the party.
Under Zimbabwe’s Constitution, should Mugabe choose to step down before the end of his term, a fresh presidential election has to be conducted. But under new changes set to be ushered in through Constitution Amendment No. 18, should Mugabe resign, or die in office, Parliament will sit as an electoral college and choose a successor. Given the two thirds majority that the ruling party currently holds, the successor would definitely be a Zanu (PF) official.
