African leaders call for lifting of Zim sanctions


The presidents of Angola and Namibia are calling on Western governments to lift economic sanctions against Zimbabwe, according to the Namibian newspaper.

A joint communique was issued on friday last week in which the two presidents said they were concerned about the impact of sanctions “and other harsh measure imposed on Zimbabwe, which are causing socio-economic hardships to the people of Zimbabwe.”

The two presidents said they were appreciative of the role played by South Africa. President Thabo Mbeki was appointed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to mediate a deal betweent the ruling Zanu-PF party and the opposition, MDC.
