Assault leaves MDC candidate battling for life

HARARE, Maxwell Mazambani, the MDC candidate for Ward Five in Gutu North in last year's council elections, was battling for his life at a Harare private hospital this week, following brutal assault by soldiers and Zanu (PF) supporters on September 25.

Mazambani, 32, was abducted from his home by a white Nissan pick-up truck, believed to belong to the wife of Finance minister Samuel Mumbengegwi. The six soldiers abducted Mazambani and three others and took them to Eastdale Farm, an Airforce base, between Gutu and Chivhu.
Mazambani was this week on a dialysis machine when The Zimbabwean visited him. He could not speak or eat. He has deep soft tissue bruising on the back, especially the buttocks (see photo). His kidneys are damaged and he has clots on the lungs.

The Tsvangirai-led MDC presents Mugabe with a serious challenge when voters go to the polls in a general election due March next year. The police said they could not confirm nor deny whether any suspects had been arrested in connection with any of the violence of the past few days. – Chief Reporter
