Silver falls short
TOP Zimbabwean clay target shooter Mike Nicholson missed automatic qualification for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games when he grabbed a silver medal at the 8th African Shooting Championships in Cairo, Egypt recently.

ittee chief executive said Nicholson was now banking on getting wild card entry for the Olympic Games, due to his past good performances.
“Mike Nicholson achieved the Minimum Qualifying Standard after a brave show in Cairo where he won a Silver Medal during the African Shooting Championships, could get a tripartite invitation to grace the Olympic Games for the second consecutive time after having been to Athens in 2004, said Mutsauki.
The 8th African shooting championships were used as a qualifier for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in China. The 33-year-old shooter managed to shoot the minimum qualification standard for the Beijing Olympic Games of 119 points out of a possible 150. – CAJ News


Five for Beijing
A TOTAL of five athletes have attained automatic qualification to the Olympic Games. In the athletics track events, the pair of Lewis Banda and Brian Dzingai attained ‘A’ standards in the 400m and 200m events respectively while Talkmore Nyongani attained a ‘B’ standard in the 400m event. He is now working towards attaining an ‘A’ standard. Two marathon runners, Tabitha Tsatsa (female category) and Mike Fokorani (male category) have already qualified with ‘A’ standards, while the veteran. Abel Chimukoko, Michael Ngaaseke, Brighton Chipere, Oliver Kandiero, Philip Bandawe join Potiphar Dombojena who recently won the Johannesburg marathon on the list of male marathon runners who have attained the ‘B’ standard. Swimming sensation and 2004 Gold Medallist, Kirsty Coventry attained ‘A’
standards in the 100m and 200m Backstroke as well as 200m Individual Medley
events. She is still hoping to qualify for the 400m Individual Medley. – CAJ

Cara wants wild card
Tennis stars Cara Black and Kevin Ullyet are banking on getting wild cards at the Olympic Games. Both qualify in the tennis doubles event but will need partners. Either Fadzai Mawisire or Fadzai Masiyazi could partner Cara for the doubles while Genius Chidzikwe could be Kevin Ullyet’s partner . Both Kevin and Cara could still get wild cards in the singles events,
strengthening Zimbabwe’s cause for increased representation in Beijing. – CAJ News


Shore wedded to job
