Headman fines MDC activists

CHISUMBANJE - A headman here, Peyisai Machona, is being accused of causing the arrest by the police of seven MDC activists on Saturday and fining them a goat each for being involved in opposition politics without his consent.

According to Mike Makuyana, the MDC’s vice chaiperson for Chipinge South, Machona summoned Peter Vito and Wedzerayi Gwenzi, the vice district secretary for youth and five others who were not named to his court last Saturday.

“The headman accused them of campaigning for the MDC (Tsvangirai) without his blessings. He tried and fined them a goat each before he called the police from Chisumbanje. Two activists were arrested for organizing a meeting without police clearance,” said Makuyana.
The men were in police custody at Chisumbanje police station, charged under a section of the Public Order and Security Act, POSA.

Independent political analyst Farai Maguhu, of the Civic Alliance for Democracy and Governance, condemned the arrests and the involvement of traditional leaders in politics.
“We are concerned when traditional leaders engage in party politics and take sides. We expect them to be apolitical, he said. – CAJ News
