Police impound MDC aid truck

CHIPINGE - Police here on Saturday impounded an aid consignment sourced by the MDC and destined for drought-stricken Ward 3 of this impoverished area.

Police intercepted the relief truckload carrying three tons of maize at Gwaya Gwaya being transported by an MDC vehicle and arrested the driver.

The MDC had sourced the maize from Daisy Hill, to feed its supporters, who have been denied GMB grain because of their political affiliation.

Councillor Joseph Masunungure told The Zimbabwean at the sidelines of an MDC rally attended by thousands outside the municipal hall in Chipinge on Sunday that the police had accused the opposition party of attempting to use relief consignments as a way of influencing voters against the Mugabe regime ahead of next year’s elections. After realizing their excuse would not wash, they changed tack and stated the maize was impounded because it was destined for the black market.

Masunungure lamented the double standards saying the ruling party was free to move its maize anywhere without police hindrance, yet the MDC was harassed for merely feeding its supporters. – Chief reporter
