They are Elisha Hama, Tarisayi Gonyami, Garikayi Chakawa, Josphat
Mufudza, Lukas Makandidze, Financial Mirirayi, Gladman Gavhu, Ian
Chirau, Nelson Mushambi, Pardon Nhavera, John Nyandoro and Anyway
Rwambiwa.
The prison officers appeared before magistrate Ms Judith Tsamba on
Thursday, who remanded them to May 27, 208 on Z$20 000 (about R10)
bail each.
Hama, Gonyani and Chakawa were charged separately. Allegations against
the three arose after they reported for duty on March 29 this year.
It is alleged that three of the suspects Manuel Baka, Francisco Jose
and Sikelete Antonio were in Hall E at Chikurubi Maximum Security
Prison and the prison officers, acting in common cause, assaulted them
using open hands and batons.
As a result, the State outline reads, the suspects sustained some injuries.
According to the State, medical exhibits can be produced in court to
prove injuries sustained by the suspects.
Allegations against the other nine prison officers also arose on the
same day after they allegedly assaulted Carlos Franscisco, Daniel
Joseph, Hefenia Akwenje, Maree Antony, Alfred Marcus, Samuel Kaunda,
Watirambethe Tjiposa, Emmanuel Vaino, Kauhitwa Gomba, Sidano Johnny,
Kshama Mazanga, Pereke Isaac, Umbuwa Mbumbi, Johannes Muyongo and Paul
Karenga.
It is alleged that the prison officers assaulted the suspects in Hall B.
They are alleged to have forced the suspects to remove their clothes
before assaulting them with batons and open hands-CAJ News.
