A rebel rhythm is born

HARARE - A new cultural activist network, Magamba, was born last week at a vibrant event filled with rebel poetry and revolutionary live music.

Magamba is a network of poets, rappers, musicians and spoken word activists who “have a free Zimbabwe in their hearts and rebel rhythm in their feet.” They aim to use arts and culture to liberate the Zimbabwean people.
“We believe that freedom begins in everyday life, in our culture, in how we sing, in how we talk, in how we dance. That’s where we need to plant it,” said one of the organizers.
Magamba has taken alternative education to the high-density areas, working with students and youth, and holding alternative cultural events such as poetry slams and grassroots theatre, where freedom of expression and rebel youth culture are paramount. -Watch out for the monthly Magamba Slams at the Mannenberg, Fife Ave, Harare beginning December 2007.
