The Zimbabwean heard that Zanu (PF)’s constitutional law expert, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs minister Patrick Chinamasa was tasked during the October 24 Politburo meeting to hurriedly draft the statutory instrument.
“They (critics) are campaigning that our children be deported yet their own children study there,” said a senior Zanu (PF) Politburo member. “So anyone who is lobbying for these deportations will lose their passports … It is quite clear that these people do not deserve the privilege of using the Zimbabwean passport.”
The proposed regulations seem principally targeted at Tsvangirai, who coincidentally, was on the same plane with Police Commissioner Augustine Chihuri’s deported son, Sylvester, who had been studying in Australia.
Chihuri reportedly told Tsvangirai at Oliver Tambo airport in Jozi: “Ndozvawaida Tsvangirai. Waita zvako ufunge. Chifara nekuti zvawaida zvaitika. Iwe ndiwe unekodzero yekuti wako mwana agare kuAustralia vedu vachidzingwa (This is what you wanted, Tsvangirai. Thank you very much. Your wish has been granted. You can be happy now because only your son is privileged to study in Australia while mine is deported).”
“Nobody is talking about sanctions and the MDC has absolutely nothing to do with the deportation of those children,” MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa said. “The threat to withdraw passports is part of an evil programme to undermine political rights and gag us ahead of the elections,” he said. – Chief reporter
