Kunonga refuses to let go of church property

HARARE
Ousted Anglican church leader, Nolbert Kunonga, who
was the Bishop of Harare, is refusing to let go of
church property and equipment despite a High Court
order instructing that he should surrender them.

The Zimbabwean is in possession of a letter recently

written by the Harare Diocese council to the head of

the Anglican Church African Central Province, Albert

Chama informing him about Kunonga’s refusal to release

church vehicles, account cheque books, computers as

well as vacate the church’s residence.

“Repeated request to Kunonga to have him release the

property and equipment as well as vacate the house

have yielded nothing and we now ask for your

intervention,” the letter states.

It further explains to Chama how Kunonga has resorted

to “enlisting the backing of state agents and other

forces outside the church to resist his ouster” in

apparent reference to the intervention into the

Kunonga saga by members from the Central Intelligence

Organisation.

Chama in October dismissed Kunonga after the

controversial Zanu (PF)-aligned clergyman had

pulled out the Harare Diocese from the

Central Province citing the controversy surrounding

the issue of homosexuality.

Kunonga has been in the news for all the wrong

reasons, ranging from supporting Zanu (PF)’s violent

land seizures and abuse of human rights.
