Depending on the ongoing talks with Zanu (PF), the conference will either take a position to contest or boycott the elections, sources said this week. If the party resolves to contest the elections, the conference will also be used to confirm candidates for House of Assembly and Senate elections.
“The decision to contest or boycott the elections will be made at the national conference after the leadership would have presented to the members progress and outcomes from the talks with Zanu (PF) and that was resolved by the national council,” a senior official said. “There is growing pressure from all the structures demanding that we should only go into the elections if there are acceptable conditions that give a free and fair environment.”
The party’s national chairman, Lovemore Moyo confirmed this. – Itai Dzamara
