MDC in pact with smaller parties

HARARE - The MDC (Tsvangirai) is negotiating an alliance with smaller parties to form a united coalition expected to put up a single candidate to contest next year's presidential elections and cooperate in the parliamentary polls.

Minutes of a meeting between party president Morgan Tsvangirai and the leadership of Zanu Ndonga show that the coalition is also expected to include elements from Zanu (PF) led by former minister Simba Makoni and retired army general Solomon Mujuru.

“The main agenda issue for discussion was that the MDC should rally behind Zanu Ndonga in the Chipinge Constituencies for the council, Senate and House of Assembly elections,” the minutes read. Zanu Ndonga would support the MDC presidential candidate.  A similar arrangement with ZAPU Federal Party is planned.

Zanu Ndonga was represented at the meeting on November 13 by its information secretary, Reketayi Semwayo and organizing secretary, Gondai Vutuzah, while Tsvangirai attended together with his personal assistant. – Itai Dzamara
