MDC youth shot and killed while fishing

KWEKWE - A retired Brigadier in the Zimbabwe National Army is alleged to have ambushed, shot and killed an opposition activist and critically injured others who were fishing in rural Kwekwe.

The Zimbabwean was told that two Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) youths, Taurai Chigede and Clement Takaendesa, were shot at point blank range by Brigadier Mavenge, while scores of other were sent scurrying for cover. Takaendesa died on the spot, and Chigede was battling for life in a hospital in Kwekwe last night, according to MDC Health Secretary Dr Henry Madzorera.

“They were fishing in Mbembeswani River when the retired army officer fired live ammunition, without even a warning shot,” Madzorera said. “These were well-known opposition activists and these attacks were senseless given the ongoing mediation between us and the regime.”
