Good news at last
HARARE - The country's HIV prevalence rate dropped sharply this year to 15.6 per cent from 18.1 per cent.
"We should caution ourselves that this is still an alarming figure that we must address," said Health Minister David Parirenyatwa.
Official statistics show that the number of people dying of AIDS each week was down to 2,214 from a peak of 2,500 in the late 1990s, when one in four Zimbabweans was infected. One in seven people are now infected.

ZYM Treasurer General kidnapped

HARARE – Zimbabwe Youth Movement Treasurer General Cde Wellington ‘General Homes’ Mahohoma has been abducted.

Mahohoma was attending his brother’s graduation at the University of Zimbabwe when he was whisked away by unidentified men in suits, suspected to be CIO.

The whereabouts of Mahohoma are still not known and efforts to contact the Avondale police station and university security have been in vain.

Youth Forum delegation turned away from celebrations

HARARE – Attempts by the Youth Forum to join the Zimbabwe Youth Council (ZYC) organised African Youth Day celebrations failed when a Youth Forum delegation was denied entry to the New Ambassador Hotel by security guards.

The celebrations had been declared open to all youth organisations registered with the ZYC.

The ZYC is based at the Zanu (PF) headquarters and has been shunned by many young people because of its allegiance to the party.

Women’s event shines – even if the lights don’t

HARARE – More than 10,000 women packed into Harare’s International Conference Centre for the Today’s Woman Conference, organised by the ZAOGA ministries and pentecostal assemblies.

During the four-day event, Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace, preached from the pulpit, accompanied by her daughter, Bona.

But visitors were alarmed by what they described as dangerously inadequate lighting.

“It was difficult to move around due to the semi-darkness that prevailed at the formerly world prestigious venue,” said Itai Dzamara, whose wife attended the event.
