The rally, set for Nhedziwa shopping centre, about 80km south-east of Mutare, was abandoned as armed and baton-wielding police officers besieged the venue.
Pishai Muchauraya, the Manicaland province MDC spokesperson, said: “Apparently we had notified the police of the gathering and we had put everything in place, but armed policemen said the gathering was illegal and therefore we had to stop.”
Manicaland police Acting Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda was said to be out of his office when his office was contacted for comment.
Muchauraya said the partisan police force had denied the MDC an opportunity to hold election campaign rallies in most parts of the province.
A fortnight ago the police and the Chipinge town council denied the party entry into Gaza Stadium in Chipinge North to hold a rally.
“In Makoni and Mutasa districts the party is faced with the same difficulties, while Zanu (PF) has the freedom to hold rallies at will,” Muchauraya said. – Own correspondentPost published in: News
