According to MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa, a group of about four Zanu (PF) supporters and war veterans ambushed the truck with sticks, stones, machetes and spears.
All the windows in the MDC vehicle were said to have all been shattered and the car extensively damaged.
The MDC provincial executive had just wound up its campaign programme in Mutoko and was driving out of Mutoko Centre when the incident occurred.
Provincial organising secretary, Piniel Denga, said they gave chase to the three youths, apprehended two of them and took them to Mutoko Police Station. “Upon arrival, the Zanu (PF) youths claimed they had been beaten up resulting in the arrest and subsequent detention of two MDC youths, Inginous Yasiti and Mazarura,” Denga said.
Police were not available for comment. Chamisa said the MDC was treating the attack as an assassination attempt and the police were unhelpful.
A similar incident happened two weeks ago when MDC chief executive officer Toendepi Shonhe and Buhera North parliamentary aspirant Julius Magarangoma were brutalized by soldiers after parking their MDC vehicle outside Defence House while having a drink in the New Ambassador Hotel.
Chamisa said the police had treated the MDC case unfairly and were clearly biased. – Chief reporterPost published in: News
