ZESA workers suspect scam

BULAWAYO - Casual workers at ZESA are complaining that they get their salaries more than a week after the date on their payslips, amid suspicion that someone in the  human resources department might be tampering with their money before handing it over to them.

Several contract workers who spoke to The Zimbabwean said that they had tried to get to their management about the problem, but their efforts hit a brick wall.

“We are supposed to get our money two days before the end of each month and our payslips are always showing that. But when we go to the bank on the date written on our payslips, we have always been turned away, as the money would not have been deposited. No one has been willing to explain this to us as our management is always dismissive,” said one worker.

Efforts to get an explanation from the entire ZESA management proved fruitless, as our reporter was referred from one office to the other, but insiders confirmed that there might be some corrupt practises.

“That issue is a hot potato and I cannot tell you much on it. I also need to keep my job and that means keeping quiet,” said a source in the department. – Bayethe Zitha
