Chikafu forms new political party

MUTARE - Former prosecutor for Mutare, Levison Batorava Chikafu, has formed a political party and vowed to use drastic means to block President Robert Mugabe leader since 1980 from running for another term.

Chikafu, who leads the newly formed Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) says the party intends to contest next year’s harmonized elections.

“The country can not afford to have Mugabe in office again,” Chikafu vowed. “We have to stop this man from continuing to destroy our country.”

Chikafu, recently acquitted on charges of corruption, has been at loggerheads with State security Minister Didymus Mutasa and Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa, whom he attempted to prosecute on allegations of instituting violence and for attempts to breach the course of justice.

He was arrested and detained, a move his lawyers said aimed at silencing him.

The formation of the new party appears to be an indication that political activists and civil society organizations have lost hope in the ability of the country’s main opposition party, the MDC to wrest power from Zanu (PF). – Own correspondent
