Investigations by The Zimbabwean have revealed that top officials in Zanu (PF) and government had planned to oust Mugabe through a coup, with the help of foreign agents, and there have been shocking revelations that several ministers and service chiefs are still under 24-hour surveillance by Mugabe’s security agents over the uncertainty caused by discoveries of plans to eliminate the aged leader.
State Security minister, Didymus Mutasa, Defence minister, Sydney Sekeramayi, Home Affairs minister, Kembo Mohadi are on around the clock surveillance by Mugabe’s security agents. Retired army general, Solomon Mujuru, who was put under house arrest in June when the six accused men were arrested, is also being tracked by the agents, as well as a number of serving senior army officials.
We have established, through highly-placed sources, that sometime in May, Mugabe was saved from an assassination attempt “after information was leaked about the plans by members of the army working with senior government officials and service chiefs”.
Said a source privy to the goings-on, “The plan involved senior government officials. The Presidential Guard had already been infiltrated. The assassination would have been done at State House through the cooperation of the whole team that was on guard on the particular day. However, the information leaked and Mugabe quickly moved to scuttle the whole plan while also hunting for his enemies.”
Our sources say the witch-hunt was vicious, with many soldiers being “apprehended or in some cases decisively dealt with, meaning there were some executions”. It is believed that some senior army leaders who died during that period were sacrificed over the coup saga.
“I cannot speak on such matters,” Sekeramayi said when contacted for comment. Mutasa declined to comment whilst Mohadi was not available.
Investigations reveal that Mugabe is still carrying out serious investigations. A reliable source told this paper that Mugabe has met the leader of the accused men, Albert Matapo, and tried to “deduce from him the names of senior officials involved in the coup plans”.
Sources privy to communication between Mugabe and the accused men say the embattled president has offered freedom to them “if they expose the real coup plotters within government and army leadership”.
Mugabe also reportedly established the involvement of agents from South Africa and Mozambique, who “had been hired to play a role in the coup and take-over of government by the coup-plotters”. The Zimbabwean can reveal that Mugabe and his handlers believe the foreign agents came into the country through the Eastern border in April and camped in Mutare to coordinate plans with locals in the army.
The state’s case against Matapo and his colleagues has failed to proceed due to lack of evidence. Rural Housing minister Emmerson Mnangagwa was implicated as the one to take over after the coup. He has denied this.
