MDC women bury the hatchet

HARARE - The MDC (Tsvangirai) National Council on Sunday pressed new Women's Assembly boss Theresa Makone to defuse lingering condemnation of her election by asking her defeated foe, Lucia Matibenga, to rejoin the women's wing executive and bury the hatchet.

The sources said the proposal was at the heart of four key resolutions made at the crucial National Council (NC) meeting.

The council resolved that Makone continue running the MDC Women’s Assembly until such time an extraordinary congress is held, at least three months after the 2008 general election.

Delegates noted that to win next year’s general poll, the MDC would embrace the principal concept of one candidate for every contested seat and resolved to work for unity and understanding with the MDC (Mutambara).

The MDC said it was deeply concerned with the deepening hardships being endured by Zimbabweans and said it would pursue talks with the ruling party while also engaging in a mass resistance programme against Mugabe’s tyranny. – Chief Reporter
