Mwanawasa champions Brown’s stance on Zim

JOHANNESBURG - Zambian leader Levy Mwanawasa at the weekend called on London to maintain pressure on Zimbabwe in remarks that appeared to be out of sync with regional leaders' expressions of solidarity towards Harare.

Mwanawasa, who caused a stir earlier this year when he labelled Zimbabwe a “sinking Titanic”, said British Prime Minister Gordon Brown should continue

to speak out until the crisis in Zimbabwe is resolved.

“I have said the nation (Zimbabwe) faces a lot of challenges. Now, he (Brown) shouldn’t get tired of speaking and he must continue until the harvest (of his efforts).

“I appeal to Brown and the entire British nation that they should continue with their efforts until the situation in Zimbabwe has been resolved,” Mwanawasa told local media, before he leaving Lusaka for Germany en route to the EU summit. He is among a very few African leaders who have spoken out over the deteriorating political and economic crisis in Zimbabwe. – ZimOnline
