Phiri wins award

HARARE - Journalist Gift Phiri, has won yet another award for his role in defending and promoting human rights in the country. Phiri won the journalism award at an inaugural arts festival and award ceremony organized by Vhitori Entertainment here this week.

The Zimbabwean received a certificate in the media house category, which was won by Kubatana.net. Vhitori Entertainment organized an arts festival in commemoration of the World Human Rights Day, which was also marked in Harare by demonstrations organized by ZimRights and Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

Prominent lawyer was among the winners as he was the only nominee in the legal category, while singer Leonard Zhakata was honoured for his role in defending huma rights through music. Theatre producer Cont Mhlanga, who has clashed with the Zanu (PF) regime on several occasions through his critical productions, was also honoured.

The organizers also gave special honour to the late MDC MP, Learnmore Jongwe, activists Gift Tandare and Maria Moyo of WOZA, who died last month having suffered several brutal assaults at the hands of police.

In the category of foreigners based in Zimbabwe, four diplomats were honoured, Swedish Ambassador, Stan Rylander, former US Ambassador, Christopher Dell, Gillian Dare and John Sheperdson. – Itai Dzamara
