BULAWAYO----Due to serious shortages of basic commodities and cash in the country prison guards Khami and Grey Prisons in Bulawayo have turned into   impounding and stealing groceries brought by prisoners` relatives.

Zimbabwe is currently facing its serious shortages of basic commodities and cash shortages because of wrong policies implemented by the Mugabe government and this has seen   most Zimbabweans struggling to survive.

At Khami and Grey Prisons in Bulawayo prison guards   are taking advantage of groceries brought by relatives of inmates then impound and steal for their own use.

According to  some  prison  guards based  at Khami  who spoke  to The  Zimbabwean   on Wednesday they  said  this is how   most of the  prison  guards  even  their  bosses  are surviving  during these  hard times.

Times  are  hard  my brother ,what happens is that we wait  for the   relatives   of   prison inmates  to bring   groceries   on Mondays, Wednesdays and  Fridays  as required  and   we make sure  that prisoners who are recipients of groceries  are not notified  about  their parcels brought and we share among  guards  on duty on the day said  one Khami  prison  who spoke on condition of  anonymity.

The  Zimbabwean  also traced one ex-convict   who was  released recently   from Grey Prison from serving a two year sentence  who said that,  when he was released  his relatives told him they use to bring groceries for him  every week but never  received  anything.

When I   was released   from prison recently I was surprised when my mother told  me   that she use  bring   lots of groceries   for  me  every week and leave it  at the gate  with the  prison guards to forward   it to me but  I never  saw   anything said Ralph Nsingo an  ex convict.

Nsingo also said while inside   they were  receiving  one  meal  per day and  they had  to share one bar  of soap per  three  inmates  for two months.

Zimbabwe  Prisons  Service (ZPS) Matabeleland Region Public Relations  Officer Sinikiwe  Banda   refused  to   comment about   the issue  referring  all questions to ZPS  headquarters  in Harare  who also did not respond  to questions send  to them by this paper
