ZCTF chairman Johnny Rodgrigues said the black rhino was under renewed threat from poachers who had stepped up their activities over the past six months.
Earlier this week, poachers shot and killed two black rhinos at Ruware Ranch in southern Zimbabwe. Police said they had recovered two rhino horns as well as a rifle that was used to kill the animals. The poachers fled.
Rodrigues said the ZCTF had recently received reports that 900 carcasses of assorted animals had been discovered in Sinamatela area of Hwangwe National park, which he said was a sign that poaching was rife in one of the country’s biggest national parks.
The Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority could not be reached for comment, but last month began dehorning the entire rhino herd in a desperate attempt to discourage the poaching of the endangered species. – ZimOnline
