Student activism under siege

HARARE - The once flourishing Harare Polytechnic has been riddled by mal administration, poor food, running of examinations, dilapidated toilets in the halls of residence, students suspension, expulsions and suppression of student rights on all fronts.

To date the most striking blow is the imposition by Principal Stephen Raza of the SRC Leadership headed by one Tanaka Chirenje, son to the Vice Principal (Training) Ms Rutendo Magadzire, replacing the one then headed by sacked former President Gumbie Tawanda. A number of students continue learning under the threats from Stephen Raza. Their crime is that they are aligned to the illegally sacked President Gumbie, a prominent and loyalist cadre to ZINASU. The case has been heard in the High Court and is now still pending in the Supreme Court.

During his tenure, Raza has sacked past Presidents of the SRC, including Kuwadzana MDC MP, Nelson Chamisa and Stephen Matenga a finals student in the department of Mass Communication Studies.

The college has also been hard hit by mass exodus of lecturers and is failing to lure and retain these much-needed professionals.

Diesel Plant Fitting (DPF) NC students’ exams were disrupted owing to Raza’s poor administration of exams. Students have already drafted a petition against him, demanding their democratic and academic freedom to choose their own SRC body. There is no doubt student activism is under siege and ZINASU must support all cadres, at this institution to restore their academic space, freedoms, conscience and rights. – Gumbie Tawanda
